BURNSVILLE, Minn. – Steve Sarvi, who is seeking the Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party endorsement for Congress in Minnesota’s 2nd District, issued the following statement today regarding the proposed joining of Northwest Airlines and Delta Air Lines:

“Northwest Airlines has been a vital player in Minnesota business for decades. Like many Minnesotans – particularly in the 2nd Congressional District, Northwest’s home – I am concerned about the impact the loss of the airline could have on our economy and on air service to our region.

“I am further concerned about the airlines’ lack of consultation with employees other than pilots during the negotiation process, as well as with Northwest’s apparent lack of regard for its commitments to the State of Minnesota. The working men and women of Northwest Airlines, as well as the taxpayers of this state, have very truly kept this airline flying during hard times – in workers’ cases, by making painful wage and benefit concessions. With our state’s job creation rate slowing, the potential loss of jobs will be even more difficult for us to deal with.

“Congressional Transportation Committee Chairman Jim Oberstar, who Minnesotans are fortunate to have advocating for us in Washington, has summed it up well: Our leaders need to approach this potential merger very thoughtfully to ensure an outcome that is positive for consumers around the country and for Minnesota's future.”
