Dear Friends,

In the Army we're trained that when we're on a mission, every so often we should stop, recheck our compass, and change course as needed. After 19 years in the military, I know this is smart advice, not just for a soldier, but for a nation.

I’m running for Congress because our nation needs to change course. America used to embody the dreams of people the world over who believed in our fight for justice and equal opportunity. Tragically, the very people who used to look to us with hope for a better day now resent us – people who associate America today with Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo Bay and the occupation of Iraq.

To get our country back on track, we need to come together and act. We need to elect Members of Congress who serve us – not their party leaders, not the President, not lobbyists. We need to elect Members who put our shared values into action; who always rely on their moral compass, engage in a dialogue with the people, and have faith in the power of what we can do together. We need to elect Members who believe in the politics of hope, not of fear and division.

In 2008, we can get our nation back on track. I want to help lead that charge as Minnesota’s next 2nd District Congressman.

It will take the efforts of many to change the course of our country. But as the longest journey begins with just one step, so does our nation’s change begin with individuals – with you and with me.
